A Cure in Sight is joined for a webinar titled: A Living Library for Uveal Melanoma with Dr. Lauren Dalvin, M.D.
"Uveal melanoma is the most common intraocular cancer in adults. Despite successful treatment of the eye tumor, up to 50% of patients with uveal melanoma will eventually develop metastatic disease. Unfortunately, there are limited effective treatment options once this cancer has spread. Thus, there is an urgent need for new, personalized therapies to improve survival for patients with uveal melanoma.
We have addressed a major barrier to uveal melanoma research, a lack of representative human disease models, by creating a unique biobank of patient-derived organoids. Organoids are three-dimensional models which simulate cancer behavior in the laboratory and can be used to study cancer biology and response to treatment. In both patients and in our laboratory, we find that each melanoma is unique. Using the collection of organoids in our lab, we will be able to study unique molecular signatures and identify personalized treatments for this cancer. Today we’ll talk about how we created these tiny tumor models and show you what it looks like to grow uveal melanoma in the lab."
Dr. Lauren A. Dalvin is a full-time Ocular Oncologist and Associate Professor of Ophthalmology with a joint appointment in Medical Oncology at Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN.
