Maureen Sanger, PhD is a psychologist with Tennessee Oncology providing counseling to cancer patients and survivors. She received her doctorate in clinical psychology from Vanderbilt University and trained at MD Anderson Cancer Center. Prior to joining Tennessee Oncology she was an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at Vanderbilt University Medical Center where she worked with the cancer and sickle cell disease programs.

Basil K. Williams Jr. MD is an Associate Professor of Ophthalmology at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, where he specializes in ocular oncology and vitreoretinal diseases and surgery. He completed his ophthalmology residency and vitreoretinal surgery fellowship at Bascom Palmer and served as a chief resident and co-director of ocular trauma there as well. He then completed an additional fellowship in ocular oncology at Wills Eye Hospital. Dr. Williams grew up in the Bronx, NY and received his Bachelor of Arts Degree from Yale University before attending The Chicago Medical School. Prior to joining Bascom Palmer, he was the Director of Ocular Oncology at the University of Cincinnati and held the Mary Knight Asbury Endowed Chair of Ocular Oncology.

Are you RARE²? Ocular Melanoma affects 6 per million people each year. Of those diagnosed, children and minority communities (people of color, indigenous peoples, etc.) make up an even smaller percentage of the patient population.
Dr. Lauren Dalvin and Dr. Justin Moser, who attended medical school together, were part of a discussion on the importance of awareness for rare diseases, and how they got involved in the work of ocular melanoma specifically.
Dr. Lauren A. Dalvin is a full-time Ocular Oncologist and Associate Professor of Ophthalmology with a joint appointment in Medical Oncology at Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN.
Dr. Justin Moser is a medical oncologist and hematologist and associate clinical investigator at HonorHealth Research Institute. He treats patients in the area with uveal melanoma and other rare diseases.
They discuss questions such as:
What is it like being a physician of those with rare diseases?
Why is a day like rare disease day an important day to spread awareness?
Why did you get into ocular melanoma? What drew you as a physician to rare disease?
How do you see the rare disease landscape changing in the future?
What are registries and biobanks? Why are they important for rare diseases? PLUG FOR INSIGHT REGISTRY , living library, what is a bio bank?
How often do you treat someone in a minatory group (like children, people of color, potential obstacles they face)?
How do you reassure a patient with rare diseases that they will receive good care in your practice?

We discuss when to use systemic therapies, what is out there besides KIMMTRAK, how to determine a path forward for introducing systemic therapies in metastatic management
McKean received her bachelor's degree from Iowa State University, where the promising athlete ran cross-country and track. During fellowship, McKean studied biomarkers for response to immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICI) in metastatic melanoma, earning her an American Society of Clinical Oncology 2017 Young Investigator Award. She now serves as the director for the Melanoma and Skin Cancer Research Program at the Sarah Cannon Research Institute at Tennessee Oncology.
